** For Your Eyes Only **
1. actually i disagree. it is not just a matter of what kind of leather is used. if the leather shoes are worn in public it sends a message to society that the wearer approves of exploiting animals for one's own gain. it seems clear that people in society copy. we wear clothes partly for practical reasons and partly to look good. anyone who sees us may admire the shoes, for either reason, and then think "oh, that gives me an idea... i need a pair just like that etc". to wear the shoes is to advertise the industry. unless the shoes have a flashing neon sign on which says "this leather is from cows/ crocodiles that died of natural causes" then other people need not know. they will just think "oooh leather shoes..." and go further contribute to such malpractice.
so, even if you havent bought the fur jacket yourself, it harms future non-human animals if u wear it.
2. yes i admit that killing can be merciful if the animal is in real pain. however, i am unsure whether i would support a restaurant that specialised in such meat. such likely expensive dishes would remind the diners how much they like meat. they might be reluctant about paying so much for it and thus be tempted to buy meat from cheaper sources. but im not decided on this matter.
3. rab fails to distinguish between the harms the non-human animal incurs in being killed, as in physical suffering, and the harm incurred as in curtailing its continued existence.
4. yes, there are many arguments to show that rab's enjoyment of meat-eating cannot justfiy killing non-human animals. i have to rush off and save the world, but just briefly, nutrition can be attained from other sources and vegetarian meals can be equally pleasurable. so on the basis that to kill animals is to inflict needless suffering, i thereby hold meat-eaters to be selfish. to be continued...
