Oop, very informative message I sent earlier.
I have never been a vegetarian, but I am seriously considering it and anyone
who defends eating meat on the grounds of taste should read Robert Nozick's
political classic "Anarchy, State, Utopia".
He makes some very strong arguments as to why you cannot justify killing
animals for pleasure and it is that which has got my mind churning.
We eat meat for the pleasure of the taste, we do not need it to survive.
Supposing someone simply enjoyed killing animals for fun, would we regard that
as morally acceptable?
One question which occurs is. Suppose all 60 million people living in Britain
became vegetarian - how long would cows, sheep and pigs exist?
Could eating meat be justified on the basis that if we didn't, those animals
we eat would soon be extinct?
This is a subject I am definitely putting a lot of thought into. I have
stopped eating meat until I can come up with a strong justification for doing
so and I will put a much more detailed discussion message together.
