just a quick response to what Alice said:

I think if computers can't produce art its pretty clear that animals or mental patients can't either. Like I said the production of art requires an individuality and self awareness [ie. in the ability to reflect on your situation in some sense] which none of the above posses. 
I did however here about a canvas which a chimp had dawbed with paint being sold as 'art'. I think this story says more about current trends in visual art [ie that a monkey could do it] than it does about the artistic abilities of chimps though. which begs the question whether we can call somthing like e.g tracy ermins bed, art? any comments?

also Alice, I definately like the idea of some 'harcore banter', but unfortunately I'm living in manchester at the moment, so i might have to miss out. sorry!
