private/ public concern and thai sweat shops

** For Your Eyes Only **
on the drugs thing, i just personally dislike the idea of relying on something to make me feel content. i would just prefer to do my own groundwork than 'cheat' and take the easy route. i think that its very easy to be best buds with everyone if u dont really know what's going on, so all that social bonding, those drunken friendships are really a bit superficial etc.
altho u say oh yeh, let ppl decide freedom of choice etc, well what about the financial cost of ppl drinking? ppl pulling 'sickies' costs this country £2 bn a yr, ok so they wont all be hangovers but some will, drinking is often detrimental to family life, alcolohol dependency issues, violence, nhs costs etc... so its not just a private matter, it is of public concern.
but on a very serious note, ok focus gang, i need ethical guidance. im going to thailand on saturday and im concerned about what i should buy. ok, so there are sweat shops in thailand, let's take that as a given, i dont want to cause harm, it will be very difficult to know what stuff is made by sweat shops, apparently even hill tribe handcrafts are made by children in near slavery conditions. so what the bugger do i do? i asked my friends who went out to such places what they thought and they said they didnt, they didnt really think about it, which kinda disgusts me.
so u could take the view that any money spent is good, boosts their economy etc. but i disagree, cos if u take child prostitution the same argument cant really be applied. if one says its ok to buy stuff that might have been made in child-run sweat shops, on the basis that ur providing an income, then it must also be ok to get a child prostitute, on the grounds that ur providing an income. but surely we feel some degree of wanting to protect the child? that's why we have labour conditions etc in this country...
ok, so im fretting
should i buy anytinh gin thailand, if im unsure of its provinance?
