ok, so singer, regan et al are philosophers yes i grant that
yes they're doing something incredible, attempting to crash through the entrenched self-absorption of the massess and make us realise that there is no justifiable ground for arbitrarily drawing a line after our own species and to hell with the rest, we must also consider the interests' of others, so considering that a cow is sentient it has an interest in not feeling pain, enjoys pleasurable states, is able to form ties and bonds with its family, has an interest in continued survival and hence we must bear this in mind when weighing up the scales... for me, they fall quite decidedly in favour of the cow, so to hell with needless cruelty...

ok, so yes, singer had a big impact on my life... but so too do people like george monbiot, polly toynbee etc etc. are the comment and analysis pages of the guardian/ newstatesman/ economist the sweat of philosophers? i dont see the difference between singer make us think by ranting on about the suffering of non-human animals and others talking about the crippling effects of free trade...

i guess in determining whether philosophy is useful we kinda need to agree on who is a philosopher...
