RE: defences for being a selfish prat?

Who is the ecological debt due to?

Are we accountable to future generations? If so its clearly a one way
street. How can we be building a debt to those who don't exist as yet?

Western nations decided to tell the Chinese emerging economy that they
needed to think about the environment and use CVC free materials. The
response was a clear 'foohy off'. Why should the citizen's of the PRC be
forced to pay more for their goods just because of concerns caused by the
behaviour of western nations. Was this selfish on behave of the PRC?

It seems that we are more concerned about the environment then our parents,
but is this as a result of political lobbying by environmentalists or some
principle which says that the planet should be preserved as best it can.
Human beings are not likely to destroy this planet, just some of the life
that is on it. It is claimed that 99.999999% of the species that have lived
on the Earth are extinct, so in the context of the planets history our
passing is only to be expected.

What is the ecological case? This has to be made properly before anyone
needs to defend our current behaviour.

** For Your Eyes Only **

here's a question,

we know that our present mode of existence is creating a massive ecological
debt, we are using up far more of the world's resources than what we are
really due, so to speak.

can anyone offer a good defence?

i for one dont use cars, recycle as best i can, dont have baths (i do
shower, fret not) and always turn lights off but im still being an absolute
selfish arsehole - in terms of future generations... (i was very naughty
this year and used a fair few planes - one trip being the carbon equivalent
to the average family's annual consumption)

but how much do people think we ought to be doing? arguably, it doesnt
matter one iota what i do because i am just one individual, we really
require government and corporate action etc etc. those hummers must be
outlawed etc... apparently a range rover vogue does 5 miles to the gallon
around central london.. eek.

so yes, even if i was a much better person and didnt go on planes, could i
then defend my lifestyle?

any offers
