Pmaniati wrote to me:
"Alice you are a disgrace to philosophy and particularly to logic. You are
insulting the chap- as you are calling him (what a depersonalising English
expression) - who has the task to look after his younger siblings who their
father worked hard to provide support.
I suggest you go and study ethics before expressing an opinion in politics."
I think that Pmaniati is calling Alice a disgrace to philosophy and logic
based on *my* contribution to this discussion. Surely it is a disgrace to
common sense to attack someone for views that they have not expressed.
Once that quite important fault of Pmaniati's is corrected, the content of
the response should be considered. What is wrong with the term 'chap'?
Unless I am *very* much mistaken, these days 'chap' is used endearingly (or
at least sympathetically). As for it being depersonalising, i don't
understand what Pmaniati means. I do not know the flatmate in question's
name, or anything about him, apart from his horrific situation - any noun
that i could have used would have a very similar effect to 'chap'.
Also, why does Pmaniati mention ethics? It might be relevant, but how is
left to the our assumed psychic abilities. In Philosophy, i'm interested in
argument - Pmaniati's response does not contain anything like an argument.
He might have a point, but he is yet to tell us about it.
Thanks... chaps,
Daniel
