Firstly can you ask your friend not to put astrology books in the philosophy section as Borders in Ellesmere Port does.

Then to get on with the list,
Wittgenstein's Poker - a good read introducing the work of Wittgenstein, Russell and Popper.
I'd second including Russell's History of Western Philosophy.
Bryan Magee's "Great Philosophers" (if it's still available)
Godel, Esher and Bach by Hofstadter
The Mind's Eye by Dennett and Hofstadter
How are we to Live, by Singer
A selection of the Oxford series "A Very Short Introduction" (covers most of the significant philosophers)
The Oxford Dictionary of Philosophy
Descartes Key Philosophical Writings (Wordsworth Classics)
A selection of "Oxford Philosophical Texts"
John Stuart Mill's On Liberty and Other Essays (Oxford World Classics)

I could go on ......

Hello.

A friend of mine has managed to score a job in a bookshop and has been put in charge of the philosophy section. He has two shelves to fill and asked me for recommendations. The trouble is that I don't really know of many books that are suitable for the mass market (I know that they are out there, its just that I don't read them), so I've been doing a little bit of poking about. I wonder if you lot have any suggestions?

x

James
