People on the Autistic spectrum are often fascinated or obessive about small details and often, as a result, find the world as a whole completely bewildering - if you notice every small thing, identifying whole systems would be a large task. Maybe they lack this filtering mechanism? Perhaps our underlying ability to categorise is also involved in this hypothesis?
