As it turns out, there's a fairly relevant discussion about use theories of
meaning going on at Brian Leiter's blog.

Coincidentally he used the same example as me about tense.

"For example, it is a familiar cost to presentism about tense that it seems to
falsify many statements that we regard as obviously true (e.g. "England has had
several kings named ?George?")."
