Dear Edward!
I want to explain my point of view, somehow caused by my age (I am 26), level of education (Higher education in philology, Postgraduate in Philosophy, 3rd year of study) and cultural region (Post soviet and post Orange-revolution Ukraine). That?s why some of my propositions may look non-unprejudiced.
I consider your question to be extremely urgent for our time. I am a lecturer of Philosophy, Logic and Theory of Culture of Dnipropetrovsk National University, and, maybe I will surprise you, philosophy is an obligatory subject for all courses, independently of the exact specialty of the students! You faced with the problem of explication of philosophy to youngsters, and I need to explain it to numerous young (in the best case) physics, lawyers, biologists, economists... As a rule, it takes place during their first semester, when they do not know neither their profession, nor what University is, or who they are at all...
As for me, I think philosophy is a way ?how to
become saint alive?. Philosophy is based on the values of Truth, Beauty, Good. So philosopher is any man, who is rational (or just intelligent in case of existentialist ;), who deeply perceives (or even creates) Beauty, and bears ideas of Justice, Humanism and Good practically. Philosopher is a man who takes all of this systematically and simultaneously.
Also I think philosopher is a warrior who struggles for these values, who defends them when they are affected in any way. This is a man who lives according these values, not only declare them.
Or, generally, philosopher is a generous man who calls a spade a spade (calls things by their right names) and makes justice and good.
Who is philosopher in modern world? Of course, first of all, this is an academician. Then, this is a practical man ? specialist on strategy (political, social, business); this is a public man ? UN, UNESCO etc. He can also can be a good analytical. If you give me some time, I can send you variants of employment in Australia and US ? perhaps it can clear out somehow the question who philosopher is.
Another aspect of the question is its inner contradiction ? we have to explain it to people who usually have not
succeed any achievements in sciences and are not ready for philosophy. But elder scientists (Einstein, Schredinger, and other members of huge crowd of winners of Nobel Prize and members of Academies) understand perfectly well, what philosophy is and what is for. The question is about level of understanding of the essence of science and human being, it will come later and will be evident. Philosophy is not a material thing, we can explain nothing to young fresh minds. They need more experience, it will lead to the deep concept of philosophy.
I explain it to my students classically, as ?love to wisdom?, as a toolkit to get it.
P.S. Those french speak a lot...
Best wishes, Yuriy Loboda
