well i'm about to stay on at southampton for my aesthetics ma, which i know
isn't in the 'top' group, and its a bit different since i'm staying here
too, but from what i know from other people, any kind of 2:1 is fine.
you've got to remember that they'll accept your application or not before
you get your degree classification, so even if they want a 'good' 2:1 or
more, they can't really stipulate that very easily in conditions of your
offer so it'll generally be a 2:1 they ask for, or a 1st for the most
competitive places at the top unis.if you reckon you'll get a decent 2:1
that should be enough to get in most places. you'll have to submit work etc
as well so they don't just base it on your grades.

it also depends a lot on what you want to do. take aesthetics for example,
there's only a very limited number of courses available specifically in
this, so the whole league system gets a bit inverted (as far as i know just
southampton, nottingham, east anglia and sussex offer courses). so basically
look for a decent uni that specialises in the area you want to focus on.

an mphil, btw is different to a masters, thats a research based thing, so
you would normally need a masters before tackling that (for whoever
mentioned it)

one final question for matt, on his claim that oxford seems to be a level
above - i know they've got a massive department, but do they actually have
any aesthetics specialists? as far as i know they haven't. whereas at
southampton we have 3 top people. so sometimes the overall reputation of
the department isn't the best thing to go for....
