Dear All,
Andrew,
you clarifications were helpful. some futile points about your reading of my
last post.
1. im baffled that you did not grasp the point about clarity. let me be
explicit. removing ambiguities is good because it enhances the clarity of
the proposed statement
2. i didnt accuse Donnalan of accepting a false dichotomy, and then proceed
to endorse what I already claim was false. Such a position would be absurd.
I used Donnalan as an example of a philosophy who had not restricted himself
to an all or nothing approach. An approach, as I said, I agree with. I
wrote:
"often people debating this issue set up (what I believe to be) a false
dichotomy. Donnallian argued that there are descriptive and attributive uses
of proper names. i agree."
i see how this formulation may have caused misreading.
