In response to Ashley's view ethical egoism
Christian morality is a fictional characterisation of reality, it's inherently contradictory, thats why we constantly fight 'sin' in religious life, because we're constantly fighting ourselves but then that makes religion 'inexhaustable' as in there's always things about himself the believer needs it to 'correct'. This is the trademark of christian morality, it labels altruism as 'good', but since we are intrinsically egoistic we are compelled to strive for an unachievable goal.
On this view the answer to the question do true altruists exists is therefore no, religion picked out altruism as the opposite of what we are which is egoistic and then claimed that this was the object of human action. It claimed that only christianity as the one true religion could guide its followers towards the 'right' path and cleanse them of their sins, such that the need for religion would never be extinguished.
So I agree with your conclusion but I would add that its not a matter of contingency, its a matter of necessity as in there shouldn't even be the question can we be altruistic because intrinsically we are not.
Matt
