All the best, Joe Cunningham pp. BUPS Committee The First Scottish Undergraduate Philosophy Conference Ethics, Politics, and Social Values in the 21st Century Call for Papers The University of Glasgow Philosophy Society is proud to announce that it will be holding a conference aimed primarily at undergraduate students in philosophy. This will give all undergraduate students the opportunity to hear and discuss a number of papers in an open and encouraging academic atmosphere. All papers and participation will come from undergraduate students. The keynote lecture will be provide by Prof. Alan Carter, Chair of Moral Philosophy at the University of Glasgow. Prof. Carter's talk is entitled 'Beyond Primacy: Marxism, Anarchism and Radical Green Theory'. Papers submitted for the conference should be between 2,000 and 2,500 words in length, which should translate into about 20 minutes speaking time. Following the presentation of the papers, the floor will be open for a discussion of the given paper. The theme of the conference is 'Ethics, Politics and Social Values in the 21st Century', and papers should lie within the sphere of moral and political philosophy, especially the relevance of these topics to the 21st Century. This could range from issues that have a direct place in contemporary discussions, such as environmental ethics, to those that while not situated in current concerns do still have a bearing on them. This means that any topic of a philosophically moral or political character will be welcomed. Remember that while these papers are aimed at an audience of your fellow undergraduate students, this should not result in anything less than the highest standard of submission. Submissions should be made to philsoc at philosophy.arts.gla.ac.uk The deadline for submissions is Friday 9th May at midnight. In addition to a traditional conference structure, the First Scottish Undergraduate Philosophy Conference would seek to incorporate some of the radical education methodology elaborated by Dr. Liam Kane of the Department of Adult and Lifelong Learning at the University of Glasgow. The adoption of such methods would extend to holding an afternoon round table session, building on earlier group centered discussions. This would involve the larger group of delegates to be split up into smaller groups in order to facilitate a more open and inclusive discussion, allowing all delegates to air their views on a given topic, thus involving every delegate in the proceedings. Following this, the groups would return to the larger circle, where a reporting back session would lead into a chaired debate. The topic of this discussion will be related to the importance of philosophy in contemporary society. Information will follow shortly regarding registration for the conference and arrangements for accommodation. Please do not hesitate to contact us at the email address given above. _________________________________________________________________ Welcome to the next generation of Windows Live http://www.windowslive.co.uk/get-live From cypher89 at hotmail.com Tue Mar 25 08:58:55 2008 From: cypher89 at hotmail.com (Joe Cunningham) Date: Tue, 25 Mar 2008 15:58:55 +0000 Subject: [Bups-l] Submissions for the Spring Conference - 2 Days Left!
