The Twelve Project and Societies Directory
Notice: the Twelve Project is currently undergoing change. No grants
are currently available, but philosophy societies interested in the
other resources we provide are encouraged to get in touch. Updates
concerning the availability of grants will be coming soon, so keep
checking this page.
BUPS is getting involved with local societies in two important ways:
We've set up The Twelve Project to fight back against the poor state that the UK's local philsocs are in. We are raising money centrally to give grants (£50 initially) to undergrad students wanting to start a local philosophy society at their uni or college. The money we award will be in addition to any local funds raised and will come with no strings attached. We're not just throwing cash around though: the twelve universities a year that we work with will be given access to a pack of useful guides and info written by people who have successfully restarted a philsoc. They will also have access to a list of speakers who will give papers in return for expenses; a logon for our new philsoc-owners mailing list so they can swap advice with other people running a society and arrange inter-society events; mentoring contacts at other unis; and any advice from the BUPS committee that they feel might be useful.
The Societies Directory is a natural extension to the Twelve Project - it's an online database of philsocs and contacts, so that people can find local discussion and students with similar interests easily and quickly.
The funding process for these project is almost at an end, and we've put in place the resources we need to pursue them. Serious building work has now started - email us if you'd like to be involved.
